The wait is over! Tesla announced a home battery and utility-scale battery that will power future homes.
In February 2015, During an earnings call, Elon Musk had hinted about a ‘new battery’ but no details were mentioned.
The Tesla Gigafactory that is under construction is a lithium-ion factory, primarily for Tesla Motors at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Clark, NV, U.S. When completed an estimated 5 billion will be spent on this project.
Currently, the factory is 71 feet tall and stretches for more than 5.5 million square feet, or the equivalent of 126 acres. The Lithium-Ion battery is predicted to be the front-runner an emerging energy storage that will also suply supplemntary electricity. The lithium-ion batteries when combined with the residential solar market will present joyous oppurtunities for off grid living.
Tesla has teamed up with SolarCity, Ran by Elon Musk’s cousin Lyndon Rive. SolarCity was founded in 2006. Now the company has over 160,000 customers and controls over 40% of the residential market. SolarCity installs panels for both commercial and residential customers.
Leasing the solar panels for less than what would pay for your electric bill, they then take the surplus amount of energy and sell it back to local utility’s. They have now begun installing tesla batteries primarily in commercial buildings. Which allows them to store excess amount of energy for peak hours. The results are about 20-30% off electricity bills. 10 killowatt battery packs are now being tested in homes throughout california that will allow up to 3 days of power in the even of an outage.
Tesla continues to surprise us with world changing inventions for innovation and a better future. Proving there is hope and alternative ways to move forward in harmony as long as greed and power doesn’t get in the way.
